A Fat Chance
Obesity and its direct and indirect effects is set to become
the nation's next major health problem with 14 million of us being overweight
by 2010 of which, worryingly, 1.4 million will be children.(UK) An entire
generation of children now at primary school is heading towards increased
rates of serious health problems, a government committee has just reported.
Being overweight is actually more damaging to health than smoking or heavy
drinking and obesity costs the nation around £3.5 billion per annum which is
set to rise to £4.5 billion p.a. in three years if the trend continues.
Not only do overweight people suffer from mechanical problems,
including osteoarthritis, due directly to the excess weight that they are
carrying, but they also have a much higher risk of developing diabetes, heart
disease, strokes and, unknown to most people, cancer.
Measuring the level of obesity is best done by recording the body mass
index (B.M.I.), which is calculated by dividing the weight in kilograms by the
height in metres squared. A healthy person needs to have a BMI of less than
25, which becomes dangerous over 30. In males for example a BMI over 30 will
increase the chance of colorectal cancer by a hugely significant 80%.
Excess fat is laid down differently between the sexes with women
generally putting it in external depots such as hips and thighs whereas men
tend to internalise it depositing fat around their guts, liver, pancreas and
heart. This accounts for the "beer belly" shape and so a waist measurement in
men is another way of evaluating the level of obesity. It should remain under
36" to be on the safe side. Obese people are in fact malnourished as they tend
to eat more processed foods and highly calorific foods and so slowly become
deficient in vitamins and minerals. Even the average person today consumes 5 -
600 more calories per day than they did 30 years ago and with most of us in
more sedentary jobs and driving rather than walking or cycling to work, this
increase is not being burnt off with exercise.
The answer to maintaining an optimum weight is simple - `Eat less
and move more'. The eating should be healthy, with plenty of fresh fruit
and vegetables, and a balanced mixture of lean meat and oily fish with minimal
animal fat. In fact an ideal ratio would be 50% carbohydrate, 30% fat
(unsaturated) and 20% protein.
Some joker said, "dieting is easy - I do it all the time!" Of course
many people do and their need to diet has caused many different types to
proliferate within a very lucrative market. Remember some of the older ones
like the F Plan diet (and you think F stands for fibre?!) or the cabbage soup
diet and the newer ones like the wine diet, quite appealing really, or the
G.I. diet.
They all work to a degree but are often not sustainable because keeping
weight in check involves not only healthy eating with the correct balance, but
portion control and the need to supplement with vitamins and minerals; an idea
that is still controversial but becoming accepted within the medical
fraternity, as there is now incontroversial evidence that the quality of our
food has deteriorated markedly.
It just does not contain the level of vitamins, minerals and trace
elements that it did, even 20 years ago. An example would be the most
important antioxidant mineral selenium, (not found in Aloe Vera by the way),
which is down by an average of 50%.
They are either not present at harvest or are lost during the long
transit time to the end consumer - us. People now even talk about food miles
to describe product on the supermarket shelves. I believe we have an answer to
this burgeoning problem which can help overweight people redress the balance
whilst at the same time providing Distributors with a business within a
business. This is the Clean & Lean programme. The first nine days is
really a kick start, as calorific intake is drastically reduced whilst still
maintaining the important nutritional intake achieved by taking Aloe Vera Gel
and Bee Pollen. Desire for food is controlled by using the natural appetite
suppressant Garcinia together with meal replacement drinks and frequent drinks
of water. It is not easy and does require commitment so I feel most people
need a period of psychological preparation before they embark on it, as one
does before attempting to stop smoking, given that a lot of what we do is pure
habit.
Following the Clean 9 period is the Lifestyle 30. A
further 21 days in which reduced calorific intake is maintained albeit at not
such a harsh level together with an increased exercise programme. There now
has to be an ongoing change of diet and lifestyle together with a continued
supplementation programme that will ensure the weight loss is maintained. A
change in shape and weight will be easily noticed and so the visible success
becomes a powerful testimonial for the system.
